The Dilemma

Sunnyfield currently owns seven of its 29 group homes. All others are rented and often at market rates. Forty people live at two congregate-care facilities, Carinya and Hostel, based at Allambie Heights.

At the best of times, moving home can be stressful. If you have an intellectual disability, it can be quite an ordeal.

Suitable rental properties can be difficult to come by. Long term leases are hard to obtain and in some areas, a regular lease is only six months. Rental homes often need modification but only as far as the landlord will allow.

Moving is also expensive! Costs can exceed $20,000 each time a move occurs. Repair work on vacating a house and the costs of updating the new home to suit the needs of its new residents all adds up. Ramps and safety rails all need to be individually fitted.

For a person with disability, having a stable home environment makes a big difference in their life.

People with disability require consistency in their life and substantial change is not something they easily adapt to. In addition to being an emotionally draining process, moving also requires extensive plannning to ensure the transisition is as smooth as possible.

But when things goes well, a house quickly becomes a home.

Carol (left) is a great example of how a stable, caring environment can make a world of difference. Carol has been with Sunnyfield for 45 years. She lives in a group home with five others and works at Sunnyfield's cafe. On her day off, Carol volunteers for Meals on Wheels.

Unfortunately, there are many people who are still waiting for a permanent home and a permanent home is the first step towards providing the People We Support with stability and security. With security comes a greater sense of independence, which significantly boosts confidence and self-esteem and improves a person's quality of life.
